Should we adopt the patient centered medical home?  Should we adopt employee incentives for wellness? Should we adopt the latest evidence-based guidelines on community cancer screening?   Each of these questions involves a decision about whether to adopt an innovation.  How we make these decisions can have a profound impact on whether and how we optimize our resources.

Deciding whether to adopt an innovation is both art and science, and we still have a lot to learn about how to make adoption decisions.  The good news is there are lessons to be learned from decades of research on adoption of innovation.  We can put these lessons to work when we are making decisions about adopting innovations in our own organizations.  As a starting point, here are five questions to ask when contemplating whether to adopt an innovation...
